The Saturday Question

"What are we doing this weekend?"

If you’ve asked that question for the third weekend in a row, you’re not alone. Most “family fun” days look the same, and feel the same on the credit card.

  • The kids are bored of the same indoor places. Parents are tired of paying $80 for it.
  • You want a real country day. Not a manicured agritourism “experience” with wristbands and lines.
  • The grandparents want to come too, and most kids’ activities don’t leave room for them.
  • You’d drive an hour for something worth it. Just not for a roadside stand selling Georgia peaches.

That’s the day we set out to make when you take a ferry ride across the river to visit us in Calhoun County, IL.

Why People Cross the River

Family-grown. Fresh-baked. Worth the trip.

Debbie and Blake Kamp, mother and son, run Hagen Family Orchard the way the family always has. Peaches off our own trees and fresh baked goods from our own ovens.

A Day at the Orchard

The Hagen Way

Four steps. About four hours, give or take a slice of pie.

1

Cross the river.

Brussels Ferry (free) from the Grafton IL , or Golden Eagle Ferry (toll) from St. Charles MO. Roll the window down. The kids will love it.

2

Walk in. Look around.

Step into the storefront. See what’s pulled fresh that morning. Pick a pie off the rack. Grab a peach dumpling or cup of ice cream to enjoy at one of our picnic tables and let the grandparents off the hook for a minute.

3

Take some home.

A blackberry pie still warm from the oven. A jar of apple butter. A basket of peaches. Peach dumplings (made with Debbie’s famous scratch crust) ordered to-go in the summer.

4

Come back.

Peaches July-August, blackberries in July.  Apples and pumpkins by Fall.

Save the trip. Check what’s ready.
